The short answer
In Homeroom the books are not a second system. Every online payment posts to a budget line the moment it settles, with the fee broken out. Cash and checks are recorded on the same screen. Reimbursements come in with receipt photos, route to an approver, and post when paid. Budget vs. actual is live, and the year-end packet is one click.
Reimbursements that don't need a spreadsheet
A room parent snaps the receipt on their phone, picks the event, submits. The treasurer approves from the queue; the payout is recorded; the budget line moves. Every step is in the audit log.

What it doesn't do (yet)
No direct QuickBooks sync — export CSV. No bank feed. No 990-EZ preparation; the year-end packet gives your preparer the numbers.

Does it replace our accounting software?
For most elementary PTOs, yes: income and expense by category, reimbursements, and reports are all there. A PTO with payroll or a large endowment should keep its accountant's tool and use the CSV export.
