Who is behind PTO Homeroom, and what happens to your money
A board handing a new tool its roster and its bank account deserves plain answers. These are the ones we get asked.
Who makes it
PTO Homeroom is built and run by Doug Nelson from New Jersey, with a sitting PTO president as the first design partner. There is no sales team; the person who replies to email is the person who wrote the software.
Since when
The product launched to the public in September 2026, built over the preceding months with a sitting PTO president as design partner. It is new, and the comparison pages say so wherever a competitor's track record is the honest advantage.
How it makes money
A published 3% platform fee on money that moves through Homeroom, shown as its own line at checkout and covered by the payer by default. No subscription, no per-family charge, no paid tier for the features boards use today. If your PTO collects nothing, it owes nothing.
Where the money sits
Payments run through Stripe and settle directly to a Stripe account your PTO owns. Homeroom never holds your funds; it takes its 3% as a Stripe application fee on each charge. Card processing (2.9% + 30¢) is Stripe's, not ours.
Who can see what
Families see only what a board publishes to them; the directory is opt-in; board access is per role. Every money action is written to an audit log the board can read. Parents never create a password: each email carries a signed link that opens the right page.
How you leave
Everything a PTO puts in comes back out: the roster exports as CSV, receipts and the audit packet export at any time, and your Stripe account is yours regardless. Closing an organization removes its data on request.
What it runs on
Cloudflare for the site and API, Supabase (Postgres) for data with row-level security on every table, Stripe for payments, Resend for email.
What it does not do yet
Silent auctions, text messaging, automatic translation and background-check tracking are on the roadmap, not in the product. The public ideas board shows what boards have asked for and what is next.
