The short answer
Homeroom's join form does four things in one submission: takes dues (card, or records cash/check later), creates the family with every adult's contact, places each student in a grade and homeroom, and captures the directory opt-in. Membership itself is derived from the dues payment — there is no separate list to keep in sync.

Teachers and second households
Teachers can join through their own link (free or paid, the board's choice), with a t-shirt size for spirit wear. A second household can be added so a divorced family gets two contacts and one student record.
