Konstella alternatives: PTO platforms compared on what they publish
Konstella is well liked for one thing: getting a message from a room parent to the right classroom, in an app parents already have open. Boards look elsewhere for three reasons. The price is never published, so a board can't compare it. Money and the treasurer's books live somewhere else. And every parent has to install and join the app before anything reaches them.
The short answer
The main alternatives to Konstella are PTBoard and Membership Toolkit (full PTO platforms with published subscriptions), Givebacks (the same plus PTA dues remittance), Cheddar Up and SignUpGenius (single-purpose tools for money and volunteer slots), and PTO Homeroom (no subscription, no parent logins, room-parent messaging with recorded permission, and the treasurer's books built in). If your real need is classroom chat between parents, Konstella still does that best; if it is running the PTO, the others cover more.

What Konstella costs
Nothing is published. There is no pricing page on konstella.com; schools are asked to request information, and the FAQ says it is free for parents and funded by school and district subscriptions. Third-party articles quote figures that disagree with each other, so this page repeats none of them. A board that wants to compare on price has to ask for a quote first.
If the problem is room-parent communication without the app
Konstella's model is that parents join the app. Homeroom's is that they never have to: every message is an email with a link that opens the right page, and a room parent reaches her classroom through a Room link families use to say what she may send them, with that permission recorded. PTBoard and Membership Toolkit send email to classroom groups too, but the parent has to hold an account.
If the problem is money and the books
Konstella lists sales and donations as a feature; the treasurer still keeps the ledger elsewhere. PTBoard, Membership Toolkit and Givebacks collect dues and store orders and report on them. Homeroom is the one platform in this list with budget-vs-actual, reimbursements with receipts and an audit packet in the same place as the payments.
If the problem is fundraising
None of the communication platforms run a fun run well. For a pledge-based event compare Homeroom (student pages, class rollups, 3% shown to the payer), Get Movin' (a surcharge families see at checkout) and Boosterthon (staff on site, and a fee that pays for them).
Where Konstella still wins
Private messaging between parents, classroom groups that parents actually use, a mature mobile app, and the network effect of a school that is already on it. If your community is happy in the app, the reason to move is the PTO's side of the house, not the parents'.

It is free for parents. The school or PTO pays a subscription that Konstella does not publish; you have to request a quote.
What is the closest free alternative to Konstella?
PTO Homeroom has no subscription for the PTO and no parent accounts; a room parent messages her classroom by email with each family's recorded permission. It does not offer parent-to-parent private messaging.
Can a room parent use Konstella without the PTO?
Yes, many do, which is why PTOs end up with Konstella for classrooms and a second tool for dues and fundraising. The alternatives above each try to be the one place.
